The Most Common Things That People Forget At Home While Traveling

Taking a vacation can be wonderfully relaxing, right up until you realize you forgot something essential at home. It happens to the best of us, as a new survey finds that nine in 10 Americans admit they’ve had a “Home Alone” moment - figuring out they left something important behind while en route to their destination.

Luckily, most folks aren’t forgetting their kids at home, but the poll reveals the way people prepare and plan for trips - or don’t. According to the survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults:

  • The most inconvenient things they’ve forgotten include a charger (34%), toiletries and beauty products (32%), sunscreen (27%) and medication (18%).
  • The list also includes socks (17%), water bottles (14%) and even their wallet (8%).
  • This may be because 37% of people say they’re more forgetful when traveling, leaving an average of three items behind on every trip.
  • Forgetting essentials negatively impacts the trip for 42% of travelers, since they have to spend more money (27%), buy alternate products (25%) and just don’t feel their best (10%).
  • But 89% say they’ve learned from their mistakes and are trying to be more prepared than ever for their summer travels.
  • Some respondents say their good habits get derailed when they’re traveling, like healthy eating (51%), budgeting (44%) and even staying hydrated (31%).
  • The upside? For 31%, they’re just more focused on having fun than sticking to their usual routine.
  • Nearly a quarter (23%) of travelers are fortunate to have a “mom friend” with them - someone who keeps the group together, reminds everyone to eat and drink, and has supplies on hand, including napkins or Band-Aids (40%).
