Signs Your Body Is Telling You That You’re Too Stressed

Have you been experiencing symptoms or conditions that seem to have come out of nowhere? Before you run to the doctor, you may want to do a self-check to see if it’s caused by stress. It turns out the body responds to stress in many different ways and some of them are physical, like these.

  • Hair loss - If you’re losing hair in clumps or getting bald patches, stress could be to blame. There are three different types of stress-related hair loss that may be causing it.
  • Breakouts - Stress can alter your hormones and this can lead to breakouts. When the body produces cortisol - the primary stress hormone - it signals to the glands to make more oil and oily skin can cause acne.
  • Muscle tension - The body can tense up naturally when you’re stressed, whether it’s emotional stress or physical stress, like from a car accident. You may feel it in your shoulders, neck and back or get a sore jaw from clenching your teeth when you’re feeling stressed.
  • Fatigue or insomnia - Sleeping too much and having trouble sleeping can both be caused by stress. Fortunately, if you can manage your stress, it’s easier to get your sleeping routine back on track.
  • Change in appetite - For some, stress leads to binge eating, for others, it means not wanting to eat at all.
  • Headaches - Stress commonly causes stress-induced headaches and migraines. If the body is strained, it can bring on a tension headache, which could lead to a migraine. And it’s also normal to get emotional stress-related migraines.
  • Infections or colds - Continued stress can affect your hormones and lead to a suppressed immune system, which can lead to illnesses or infections.
