What We Think About the State of TV These Days

These days between broadcast TV, cable and streaming services there’s a lot of content for folks to enjoy, but how they are watching it, and whether they like all the options varies. Well, now a new survey reveals how folks feel about TV-viewing experience, and you may be surprised by the results.

A new YouGov poll finds:

  • Only 23% of Americans think we are currently in the golden age of television, with 45% saying we’re not, and 32% unsure.
  • And it’s pretty apparent that how folks watch TV has changed from years past.
  • 42% of folks admit they spend at least half of their TV watching time binge-watching a program.
  • 45% sometimes binge watch, while only 14% never binge-watch.
  • 49% of TV watchers would rather a show release all their episodes at once, while 30% would rather episodes be released weekly.
  • When it comes to types of shows, Americans are twice as likely to enjoy serialized shows, than episodic shows with self-contained storylines that could be watched in any order.
  • Plus, most people, 46%, prefer hour-long shows, while only 26% like shows at are 30 minutes or less. 

And while these days folks have tons of content to choose from, many aren’t necessarily thrilled by that.

  • 38% of people say they feel overwhelmed by all the TV viewing options to choose from.
  • 55% are happy with so many choices.
  • Men are more likely than women to feel overwhelmed by all the TV choices.

Other tidbits from the survey:

  • Only 28% of Americans say they are bothered by TV spoilers, while 23% say spoilers bother them a lot and 49% say they bother them a little.
  • 62% are less likely to enjoy TV if they have to watch commercials.
  • Only 8% enjoy shows with laugh tracks.
